WELLSVILLE-Not much is happening in Wellsville this time of year so when a new grocery store has a ribbon cutting it’s a big deal. A large crowd gathered outside of Sam Patch Co. Grocer & Sundries in Wellsville for their Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Friday Dec. 12, 2025.
The 20,000 square foot store sits on a 4.25-acre site located at 825 E. Main in Wellsville, near Sharps Transport and northeast of Maverik. Sam Patch Co. is an independent grocer that fits the trend of new grocery stores across the country opting for a smaller footprint.
Backed by his wife Tammy and their children Mike Baldwin, the store owner, welcomed and thanked the people for their support. He then went on to thank the many people and builders that made his dream possible. He also excused his partner Jason Hurd of Tremonton who couldn’t be there.
“The store is named after Sam Patch a dare devil who preceded Evil Knievel they jumped over a lot of things in their lives,” Baldwin said. “Kind of like the big jump of faith it took to open this store in Wellsville.”
The market features a deli, produce, meats and household staples, along with what the Baldwin describe as a hands-on, neighborly approach to customer service. The company also has Chevron fuel station so people can fill their tanks with gas before or after their visit to the store.
Wellsville Mayor Thomas Bailey said he was excited about having the store in his town and asked the people to patronize it.
“I get asked by a lot of people why we don’t have more businesses in Wellsville,” he said. “Mike has put a lot of money into this store, and we need to support him and his investment.
After Mayor Bailey cut the ribbon, a large crowd gathered to get a free hamburger and hot dog offered to those who came to the opening. Santa Clause made an appearance to the excitement of the children in the crowd.
Vendors from Monster Energy Drinks and Sara Lee Bakery were handing out free samples after the ceremony. Inside of the store they had people handing out free samples of products and merchandise for the public to try.
The Wellsville store is the second Sam Patch Grocer & Sundries store, the first store opened in Island Park, Idaho.
The store will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
