SALT LAKE CITY – In a year marked by increased giving and volunteerism across the United States, Utah and Wyoming have emerged as examples of generosity, according to the latest World Giving Index by WalletHub.
The report, which highlights the most charitable states in the country, places Utah at the very top, reaffirming its reputation as the most philanthropic state in the nation. Meanwhile, Wyoming follows closely behind as the second-most charitable state, showcasing the spirit of giving that pervades western states.
Utah has earned its place at the top of charitable states with statistics that reflect its residents’ dedication to helping others. The state boasts the highest volunteer rate in the country, with an impressive 40.7% of its population actively engaged in volunteer work. Moreover, Utahns contribute an average of 39.42 volunteer hours per capita.
The deeply ingrained sense of community and spirituality in Utah is a driving force behind its philanthropy. WalletHub’s study found that Utah residents donate a significant 3.89% of their income to charitable organizations, showcasing their financial generosity. Over half of the state’s population also donates their time to good causes, further emphasizing the culture of giving that prevails in the Beehive State.
Utah’s charitable efforts are not only recognized but also celebrated. The Utah Nonprofits Association even honors exceptional volunteers with the “Hearts & Hands Award” during their annual Philanthropy Day celebration, underlining the state’s dedication to supporting its community.
However, in stark contrast to Utah’s volunteer rate, percent of donated income and percent of population who donate time and money, Utah ranks 50th in Charities per Capita. Wyoming, on the other hand, is tied for first with Montana, Delaware, and Vermont.
Wyoming, despite being the least populated state in the nation, has secured its position as the second-most charitable state in the United States. With a commendable volunteer rate of 39.2%, it ranks second-highest in the nation, illustrating the state’s commitment to giving back.
Wyoming’s charitable spirit extends to providing numerous giving options on a per-resident basis. The state boasts the third-highest number of Feeding America food banks per 1 million residents, ensuring that those in need receive vital support. Furthermore, Wyoming hosts 47.41 charities per capita, showcasing the diverse range of charitable organizations available for residents to support.
One notable event that highlights Wyoming’s charitable nature is WyoGives Day, where residents and businesses unite to raise millions of dollars for local communities in need.
WalletHub’s World Giving Index compared all 50 states across 19 key indicators of charitable behavior, divided into two dimensions: “Volunteering & Service” and “Charitable Giving.” These dimensions included factors such as volunteer rates, volunteer hours per capita, share of income donated, share of population donating time and money, the number of public charities, and more.
The results of this comprehensive study reflect the unwavering commitment of Utah and Wyoming residents to giving back to their communities and supporting charitable causes.
