LOGAN — A 19-year-old Logan man has been cleared of all pending charges against him for allegedly threatening to harm passengers on a Connect Transit bus. The decision was made after additional evidence contradicted initial statements from witnesses.
On Wednesday afternoon, 911 dispatch operators received a call from Connect Transit about 2:30 p.m. about a man who while getting on a bus claimed to be armed and was going to “kill people.” The driver quickly notified his supervisor, who contacted law enforcement.
Police located the bus in North Logan near 1600 N. 200 East. With the help of Cache County Sheriff’s deputies and North Park police officers, the bus was stopped.
Landon Oliphant was originally taken into custody. He was reportedly carrying a backpack, which was later searched but no weapon was located.
Law enforcement escorted the other passengers from the bus. Each were checked for weapons but none were found.
Thursday, investigators said they had received video and audio recordings from the bus involved in the incident. The recordings contradicted witness statements and showed that another passenger made the threat, not Oliphant.
The police department said Oliphant has been cleared of making the threat, and all pending charges against him will be dismissed.
