LOGAN — This January, United Way of Cache Valley is seeking volunteers 55 and older for training and volunteer time to help others overcome anxiety, depression, even suicide ideation.
On KVNU’s For the People program on Monday, Tina Brundage, community resource and program director, told us more about the program.
“The United Way of Cache Valley has recently teamed up with AmeriCorps Seniors and received a federal grant to help kick this program off. So we’re just getting it up and running,” Brundage said.
She said they are currently recruiting and they have community partners with them for this program, such as TheFamilyPlace-Utah, who is looking for some help from their volunteers, as well as the Cache County School District.
Brundage said the older volunteers benefit as well as those they are assisting.
“Correct, yes, I think they benefit as much if not more than the people that we’re serving, because it does get them out. Our program being a federal grant, they have a lot of stipulations that we need to meet which I think are great. They require that we do a monthly training with the senior volunteers and a monthly appreciation breakfast.”
Brundage said the volunteers are not only going out and helping the community, being able to give back and getting the benefit and reward for that, but they also get together so they can socialize with the other volunteers.
She said those who are in that 55 and older age group can volunteer and get more information at UnitedWayofCacheValley.org.
Plus there are always other ways to volunteer without the age stipulation in other programs through the United Way.
