LOGAN — Drivers traveling through Logan Canyon should prepare for daytime delays as the Utah Department of Transportation nears the halfway point of a major fiber optic installation project.
Motorists can expect multiple active work zones with one-way alternating traffic along U.S. Highway 89, between Logan and Bear Lake, and State Route 243 near Beaver Mountain Ski Resort.
UDOT officials are advising motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists to use extreme caution, noting the corridor currently contains trenches, uneven road surfaces and loose gravel. Drivers utilizing turnouts within the work zones should wait to re-enter the travel lane until they see a line of vehicles traveling in their desired direction to safely merge with the one-way traffic flow.
Over the next two to three weeks, crews will operate at intermittent locations to install concrete vaults and junction boxes, and to perform drilling and trenching in the traffic lanes.
Specific active work zones include:
- Mileposts 462.25 to 464.5 near Stokes Nature Center: Preparation for concrete vault installation and drilling operations.
- Mileposts 468.5 to 470.5 near Card Canyon: Concrete vault and junction box installation, along with trenching. This work will progress incrementally down the canyon toward Logan on a weekly basis.
- Mileposts 474.25 to 476.25 southeast of Templefork: Drilling, bridge work and junction box installations.
The yearlong project, which began in May 2025, is designed to improve broadband access and connectivity for Logan, Garden City and the Beaver Mountain area. According to UDOT officials, the infrastructure upgrades will also significantly enhance cellphone communication capabilities and strengthen emergency service support throughout the canyon.
Travelers are advised to plan for extra travel time until the project is finished. Construction is anticipated to conclude in the fall.
