LOGAN — The new year has already come with a few surprises to residents in northern Utah, as a series of minor earthquakes have been recorded during the first few days of 2023. The latest and strongest was reported Tuesday afternoon.
According to officials with the University of Utah Seismograph Station, the latest quake occurred 2:44 p.m. just over four miles southwest of Amalga.
According to officials, the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.1 with a fairly weak to light impact throughout Cache Valley.
While the quake may have been classified as minor, it was again felt by many residents in and around Cache County.
Officials at the US Geological Survey reports they received more than a hundred reports from different citizens who felt the quake. A majority of those residents were in the North Logan and Hyde Park communities.
The first quake was reported Monday morning just after 6:30 a.m. That earthquake had a magnitude of 2.56 and was located near Benson.
Later that night, a larger quake was reported shortly after 10:50 p.m. just five mile west of Hyde Park. That earthquake had a magnitude of 2.9 with a fairly weak to light impact.
Several aftershocks have also been reported in the same areas.
Although the quakes have jolted many people, no injuries or damage have been reported.
