NORTH LOGAN – Auditions have been set for the upcoming production of the recent musical comedy Something Rotten!, which will be a joint effort by the Cache Theatre Company and Music Theatre West.

In-person try-outs for that show will be held in 15-minute increments from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 and Friday, April 19 at the Cache Theatre Company Academy Building in North Logan.

Mandatory one-hour dance auditions for Something Rotten! will be held at 8:30 p.m. each night.

Call-backs will be held by invitation only on Saturday, April 20.

Something Rotten! is a rock musical comedy with a book by John O’Farrell and music/lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Set in 1595, the story follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, as they struggle to find success in the theatrical world in competition with the wild rock-star popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare, the dominant dramatist of the Elizabethan era.

In desperation, they create a new theatrical genre – the musical comedy.

The result is kind of the Renaissance equivalent of those old movies when Judy Garland says to Mickey Rooney: “I know! Let’s put on a play in the barn.”

The production will be directed and choreographed by Stephanie White, with music direction by Karen Tuescher and production management by Sebrina Woodland.

Those auditioning will be asked to sing one minute of a Broadway musical theater song in the style of the show that displays vocal ability as well as character and personality, according to the MTW website.

Would-be performers are also asked to prepare a one-minute Shakespearian monologue or sonnet reading.

The website advises that anyone auditioning must attend one of the two dance sessions and plan to stay for the entire hour. Appropriate clothing – that will allow the participant to move freely – and footwear are also recommended.

The audition call for Something Rotten! is for performers 18 years of age and older.

Up for grabs are the principal roles of an ego-filled Shakespeare; the jealous Nick; his besotted brother, Nigel; Bea, Nick’s wife; the Puritan maiden Portia; the soothsayer Nostradamus; Brother Jeremiah, another Puritan; Lord Clapham, a patron of the theater; the loan-shark, Shylock; and the narrating Minstrel.

The show’s ensemble will include townspeople, actors, servants, crowd members and choral singers.

Would-be performers should bring a filled-out the MTW audition form (see www.musictheatrewest.org/music-theatre-west-upcoming-auditions); an attached head shot; and a list of personal conflicts in the period from July 22 to Sept. 3 to the auditions.

Rehearsals for Something Rotten! will begin in week of July 22. The company’s website indicates that the joint company will typically rehearse weekday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The performance dates for Something Rotten! will be Sept. 13 to 21 at Ellen Eccles Theatre in downtown Logan.

The CTC Academy Building is located at 1940 North Main Street in North Logan.
