LOGAN – There are close to 100 different clubs at Utah State University to meet the extracurricular interests of students, including one of the newest: the boxing club.

Undergraduate student Scott Swain’s application to establish a boxing club was approved last October.

He said his interest in the sport started in high school when he was searching for a form of cardio exercise other than running, because he hated running.

“So, I started boxing,” Swain said. “My dad bought me a heavy bag for my birthday, and I ended up liking boxing so much I started running to kind of develop my cardio so I could box better.”

He said the club started with four individuals but since then it has grown to about a dozen or more members each week. During each session of the club he said there are a lot of drills, working on developing the technique of boxing. Sometimes there might be some sparring.

“It’s a USU club, we want to keep everything safe, so our sparring is pretty low intensity,” Swain explained. “We make sure we pull our punches, we always have mouth guards and head gear.”

Swain said anyone interested in joining should contact him at scottswain99@gmail.com. Hour-long meetings are Fridays at 5 p.m. in the Aggie Recreation Center (ARC) north of Nelson Field House.
