Honda Civic that drifted off US-91 north of Smithfield and was rear-ended by a Toyota SUV, Nov. 12, 2024.

LOGAN — A teenage boy was hospitalized with serious injuries after a two vehicle crash Tuesday night, north of Smithfield. The accident occurred at 6:10 p.m. near 8600 North US-91.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jason Kendrick said a Honda Civic was travelling southbound with two boys inside, the 17-year-old driver from Smithfield and a 14-year-old passenger.

Troopers report the vehicle drifted off of the road and then overcorrected, spinning 180 degrees into the northbound lane, where it was rear-ended by a Toyota SUV. The impact of the crash pushed the rear tire into the car, where the teenage passenger was sitting.

Kendrick said firefighters and paramedics had to carefully extricate the boy from the vehicle. They transported him by ambulance to the hospital, where he reportedly had critical injuries.

Troopers report both the drivers of the Honda and the Toyota, a 42-year-old female from Smithfield, had only minor injuries. Neither had to be hospitalized.

The crash closed a section US-91 for several hours to southbound traffic, while crews treated the injured passenger and cleared the wrecked vehicles. Motorists were detoured west of the crash, many reporting difficulty navigating the dirt roads.

Kendrick said the occupants of both vehicles were wearing seat belts. Troopers are still investigating what caused the Honda to drift off the road.
