LOGAN — A critical incident investigation is underway after a SWAT standoff unfolded in Hyrum early Sunday morning. The incident began around 5 a.m. on June 29, near 50 S. 400 West, in the Valley View Mobile Home Park.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said deputies responded to the mobile home after a person called dispatch and said he had killed his wife. Once on scene, the suspect, a 45-year-old man, opened fire on responding law enforcement. The deputies found cover and the Sheriff’s SWAT team was called.

Once on scene, the suspect again opened fire on the SWAT team and they returned fire. Armored vehicles from the Logan City, Brigham City and Ogden Police Departments were called and containment was set up around the house.

Sheriff Jensen said negotiations teams made contact with the suspect, who sent pictures of a bomb vest and what appeared to be explosives inside the house.

For several hours there was contact with the suspect, while armored vehicles cleared windows so SWAT officers could see into the mobile home.

Deputies issued a public notice shortly before 7:15 a.m., advising that evacuations were underway near 100 South, 400 West, and Main Street, urging residents to “take action immediately.”

By 11:25 a.m., Sheriff Jensen said the scene had been secured and the investigation had been turned over to the Northern Utah Critical Incident Team.

No additional details were immediately released, including the identity’s of those involved. The Cache County Attorney’s Office will be leading the investigation.
