MANTUA — A man suffered severe third-degree burns early Monday morning after his trailer exploded, which residents believe was caused by a propane leak ignited when the man lit a cigarette.

The explosion occurred around 12:30 a.m. at a Mantua trailer park. A nearby resident reportedly used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze while neighbors called 911.

Erin Mathis said, “We woke up to an explosion and the trailer rocking. It blew the slide out completely off.”

The injured man was found alive but his clothing was reportedly melted onto his skin. He was transported for treatment for extensive burns.

A dog belonging to the injured man was seen running around with singed fur. It was later found and taken to an animal hospital.

The Mantua Police Department and Brigham City first responders arrived quickly at the scene. Residents were reminded to ensure their carbon monoxide detectors are operational and to double-check propane connections following the incident.
