WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rather than savoring a rare victory from the conservative Supreme Court, Democrats and their liberal allies used the High Court’s ruling in the case of Moyle v. United States as a signal to launch more attacks on former President Donald Trump.
“This ruling does not change the fact that women across the nation are being turned away from emergency rooms and denied reproductive care because of Donald Trump’s abortion bans,” said Vice President Kamala Harris in a statement issued on June 27.
“A second Trump term (in the White House) would make matters even worse,” she added.
Harris and other Democrats were reacting to the ruling from the Supreme Court that dismissed an appeal in Moyle v. United States, returning the case to a lower court and reinstating an order blocking the Idaho law that banned abortions in all cases except when the mother’s life is at risk.
“Make no mistake,” said Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “This is not a lasting victory for reproductive freedoms or our constitutional system, where federal law should trump conflicting state law.”
The High Court’s 5-to-4 ruling restores the ability of doctors in Idaho to provide stabilizing treatment to emergency room patients, even if that treatment includes an abortion – at least temporarily.
“All the (Supreme) Court has done here,” Coons explained, “is left the question for another day.”
In recent weeks, the Biden-Harris campaign has abandoned its strategy of defending the incumbent president’s dubious record while instead issuing dire warnings about what Trump will allegedly do if re-elected.
In addition to its usual claim that Trump represents a threat to American democracy, the Biden-Harris campaign has repeatedly warned that Trump’s team is planning to ban abortion nationwide through executive orders that would impact women in all 50 states.
Two years ago, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a previous ruling that had guaranteed access to abortions throughout the nation since 1973. Since then, more than 20 states – including Utah and Idaho – have passed state laws banning abortion in most cases.
A television ad released by the Biden-Harris campaign on June 27 is a testimonial to Dr. Lauren Miller, a high-risk obstetrician who was forced to leave Idaho because of the extreme abortion ban in effect there.
Dr. Kylie Cooper cited a similar difficult decision to abandon her Idaho practice in January of this year.
“Doctors should be able to practice medicine,” Biden said, taking a break from debate preparation to react to the Supreme Court ruling. “Patients should be able to get the care they need.
“Instead, Dr. Cooper’s story is the reality for doctors and the women they care for since Roe v. Wade was overturned,” the president argued.
“This is all part of Republican elected officials’ extreme and dangerous agenda to ban abortion nationwide.”
With women’s reproductive freedom at stake, Dr. Miller insists that the 2024 election is the most important election of her generation and that of her daughter.
That sentiment was echoed by Julie Chevez Rodriguez, the manager of the Biden-Harris re-election campaign.
“Women’s health, lives and freedoms remain in peril across the country because of Donald Trump,” according to Chevez Rodriguez.
“The only way to stop Trump and his (Make American Great Again) allies is to vote this November to re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris.”
