Cora Ruiz-Jimenez talks to Jason Williams on KVNU’s For the People
LOGAN — It happens every ten years – the 2020 Census is about to be launched across the U.S. and they still need workers to make it happen. On KVNU’s For the People program on Monday, U.S. Census Bureau media specialist for Utah, Cora Ruiz-Jimenez said they want everyone counted.
“It is a monumental operation, and I am really looking forward for our state to have a 100 percent count. In the 2010 census, we just had a 75 percent response rate. I am looking forward to get that 100(percent) and…it hurts our communities when we don’t have an accurate count,” she explained.
Ruiz-Jimenez said the ramifications include billions of dollars in federal funding that could be lost in an under-count. It can also affect where to put new schools base on population growth, public transportation, roads, fire and police station placements, as well, depend on an accurate count. Ruiz-Jiminez said they are still hiring people
“We still have around 3-thousand positions open in the state of Utah and everybody that’s interested to work for us, for whatever reason. Maybe their reason is a civic one because they want to be part of history and give back to their community. Maybe their reason is just to have a side job and get some money for any kind of debt or vacations that they want to do. Or maybe they want this to be their first job opportunity.”
Anyone 18 or older can apply. She said the pay ranges from $16 to $20 per hour in the state of Utah. Hours are flexible and they will work around your schedule. No experience is needed and training will be provided. To apply and for more information, go to 2020Census.gov/jobs
