LOGAN — Logan Mayor Holly Daines returned to KVNU’s For the People program for her Speak to the Mayor program on Wednesday.  The mayor said the new ice-skating rink at the Carol & Jim Laub plaza has been a tremendous success since its opening.

“We allow 80 people per session, and they sell 60 places in advance online. So you can reserve your spot, but they also reserve 20 for walk-ups, if people come on the spot. But since Nov 27th, that was the Saturday after Thanksgiving when we opened the rink, we have had, and this is as of (Tuesday), 7,985 skaters. Over the holidays the sessions were basically all sold-out,” she explained.

Daines said that people seem to be using it and loving it and that’s a great thing.

Another big project is the new Logan Library building on Main street and she had an update on that.

“We are pushing back the date of the ribbon cutting, so we had planned to do a ribbon cutting on January 29th , so that is coming up very, very soon. But we still need a little bit more time, so we will be rescheduling that to Monday, March 4th at 11a.m.

So, again, we are getting very close, I mean the librarians are putting books on shelves, but the shelving isn’t quite finished…they still need to finish the shelving. We’ve had some delays with the elevators which have meant it’s difficult to get things to the upper floors.”

The mayor said the elevators are complete, they have just been trying to get the inspection done for a number of weeks.  Also there’s been an 18-month delay in the entire H-VAC system, but Daines said it will be absolutely fabulous when it’s finished.

“Again, the children’s area which will be a highlight has this wonderful mural on the wall, there will be this kind-of magical tree, the tree trunk is wood but then it has these felt leaves in different colors. I just think it’s beautiful, the furniture, they’re placing that around right now, it’s not out of the bags yet, but I’m seeing the colors. It really is going to come together in a nice way. There will be conference rooms for people to use and a community room, libraries are community centers. There’s much more than just checking out of books.”

She praised the library staff for the patience they have shown, because everyone thought it would be a year-and-a-half at the most when they moved into their temporary location at the Logan City Service Center on 600 North.
