SALT LAKE CITY — A sister missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has died and her husband was hospitalized after they were involved in a crash while serving a mission in California.

Church spokesman Sam Penrod said Elder Paul Hardin and Sister Mary Hardin were stopped at a red light on Saturday night, when a pickup truck struck their vehicle at a high rate of speed.

Sister Hardin, 65, died at the scene while Elder Hardin was hospitalized with critical injuries.

The senior missionary couple, who were from San Antonio, Texas, had been serving together in the California Fresno Mission since January.

Penrod said in a statement, “We send our deepest condolences to the entire Hardin family, their friends, and the missionaries with whom they were serving. We pray they will each feel comfort and peace at this difficult time and experience an outpouring of the Savior’s love during this time of sorrow.”
