SALT LAKE CITY — The president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced when the Salt Lake Temple will open for public tours following an extensive renovation project.
In an Instagram post showing a smiling Russell M. Nelson holding a rendering of the temple’s interior — 172 years to-the-day after the temple’s groundbreaking ceremony — the faith’s prophet announced the doors of the Salt Lake Temple would open to the public from April – October 2027.
According to a church statement, details on exact dates and times will be announced at a later time.
The original construction took four decades before the temple’s dedication in 1893. The renovation project began in December 2019 to upgrade and strengthen the historic structure. It was originally planned to take four years but has been pushed back due to construction delays.
President Nelson wrote that the Church invites everyone to come and learn about temples during the public tour.
According to a church statement, at the present time, much of Temple Square is open. Visitors can enjoy the Conference Center, Tabernacle, Church History Museum, Church History Library, FamilySearch Library and the newly renovated Main Street and Church Office Building plazas.
