PRESTON – Last April, just weeks before graduating from Preston High School, Herman Roberts was installed as President of the Idaho Future Farmers of America (FFA). He decided to delay the start of his college education to devote a year fulfilling his FFA responsibilities.
”What we’re doing, essentially, is promoting FFA and helping kids become more of an agricultural advocate,” Roberts said. “And not only that, but we’re promoting leadership and personal growth as well.”
He spent much of his time visiting the Idaho’s 95 FFA chapters and meeting many of the state’s 5000 FFA members. In January, he joined more than 70 other past and present FFA leaders for a 12-day educational and cultural experience in Spain and Portugal.
”We flew into Madrid the first day. We talked about agriculture and we learned a little bit more about that from Jennifer Clever who works for the U.S. Embassy,” Roberts added. “We also toured agricultural farms in Spain. We learned a little bit more about John Deere, and visited one of their facilities.
“And we also visited some local farms as well. Later in the trip we drove to Portugal where we learned more about agriculture in the Portuguese market.”
Herman, who was raised on a dairy farm in Fairview, Idaho, will soon begin preparations to enter Utah State University in the fall, majoring in Food Science Technology.
