ONEIDA COUNTY, Idaho — A 66-year-old Pocatello man died Monday night after his sports car struck an elk on Interstate 15 near the Utah-Idaho border, according to state police.

The crash occurred around 9:27 p.m. on northbound I-15 near milepost 0.3, just north of Portage, Utah. Idaho State Police reported the man was driving a BMW Z4 northbound when the vehicle collided with the elk in the roadway.

The driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Authorities said it was unknown if he was wearing a seat belt.

The man’s identity was not released, pending notification of family. 

Responders blocked both northbound lanes for about an hour before reopening the right lane. The left lane remained closed for an additional two and a half hours while crews worked to clear the area.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Oneida County EMS, and the Idaho Transportation Department assisted state police at the scene.
