LOGAN — A 30-year-old Ogden man has been sentenced for shooting at a group of teenagers in Providence Canyon in June 2022. Jonathan Andrew Barley was ordered to serve three years probation and 5 days of community service, after a judge said the incident could have been much worse.

Barley was sentenced Wednesday, Jan. 17, in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to aggravated assault and felony discharge of a firearm, both third-degree felonies.

According to prosecutors, Barley was arrested by Cache County Sheriff’s deputies after he shot at the group of teenagers in Providence Canyon, on June 4, 2022. One of the bullets reportedly grazed one of the victims.

At the time of the arrest, defense attorney Shannon Demler had said his client was trying to protect himself.

During Wednesday’s sentencing, Judge Brian Cannell said it was fortunate nothing bad had happened. He expressed disappointment with Barley’s behavior, noting that he had received firearm training to carry a gun.

Barley was sentenced to two days in jail but given credit for time already served. He was also placed on probation for 36 months, and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service in a gun violence or gun safety outreach area.

Judge Brian Cannell also ordered Barley to write letters of apology to the victims.
