Utah Department of Health statistics issued Tuesday indicate again fewer positive cases are being reported with 278 new cases since Monday.

There have been 923,130 cases since the start of the pandemic.

There are eight new deaths listed in the new report; two deaths have been retracted, both of which were reported Dec. 14. The COVID death toll over the course of the pandemic has grown to 4,417. The most recent Bear River Health Department (BRHD) report indicated 224 residents of Cache, Box Elder and Rich counties had lost their lives to the coronavirus.

More than 3,700 Utahns were tested since Monday and more than 4.9 million people have been tested in Utah. Over 9.2 million total tests have been administered statewide the last 23 months.

BRHD is now issuing weekly updates which reflect COVID numbers in northern Utah and their report Monday shows the district’s total case count had reached more than 51,000. Close to 2,000 people in the district have been hospitalized since the pandemic began.

In the last 28 days people who are unvaccinated are at 4.9 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 2.4 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19 and two times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people.

The number of Utahns fully vaccinated is over 1.98 million, about 61 percent of Utah’s population. There were 2,928 people vaccinated statewide since Monday and over 4.9 million vaccines have been administered since March of 2020 when the pandemic began.

As of Tuesday 314 patients are hospitalized in Utah, 12 fewer than on Monday and 70 of them are in intensive care units. More than 68 percent of Utah’s ICU beds were filled Tuesday. There have been over 33,000 Utahns hospitalized with the virus during the pandemic.

Utah’s new rolling seven-day average for positive tests is 434 a day. The new seven-day rolling average for percent positivity of “people over people” is 14.1 percent and the rolling seven-day average for percent positivity of “tests over tests” is 8.4 percent.

Included in Idaho’s Tuesday COVID update are 4,751 coronavirus deaths and the new total of confirmed COVID-19 cases is 426,164. Case counts in the three southeast Idaho counties include 2,329 total positive cases in Franklin County, 903 in Bear Lake County and 789 in Oneida County.
