NORTH LOGAN — With the 2023 Utah Legislative session just weeks away, many are watching to see what bills and directives come from that, including North Logan Mayor Lyndsay Peterson.
On KVNU’s For the People program on Wednesday, she said they will pay attention to what funding is approved, as they have some fairly big water and sewer projects that they are hoping to get going through excess money that the legislature has to dole out.
“I think one of the big things is to see how they’re going to, I guess, mandate dealing with growth. How much are they going to tie cities’ hands, there are always rumors swirling around how that’s going to look, whether they’re going to say ‘you don’t have any control over zoning’ or whether it’s going to be ‘you have to have this amount of high-density housing,’ that kind of thing,” she said.
Peterson said that would be a huge mistake.
“I think that where you’re trying to paint every single city with that kind of broad brush, ‘hey we’re going to take away all this control,’ despite those mayors or those local leaders really having their finger on the pulse of their communities where they reside,” she added.
She said, fortunately, there is the Utah League of Cities and Towns that works full-time at making sure cities’ needs are represented in those situations.
But Peterson said they will be definitely watching, and she said she feels great about the lawmakers representing Cache Valley.
