LOGAN — A 21-year-old Newton man already on probation for multiple drug convictions has admitted to showing probation agents child pornography on his phone. Jaden Nathaniel Smith was arrested July 5 after law enforcement determined he had filmed an underage girl getting dressed.
According to court records, Smith appeared Sept. 9 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to dealing in materials harmful to a minor, amended to a class A misdemeanor.
Prosecutors report that on May 1, Smith was meeting with his probation agent. During the visit, he was showing the agent pictures on his phone of his new vehicle wheels, when he displayed child pornography.
The agent contacted Cache County Sheriff’s deputies, reporting there were several photos and videos of nude girls on the phone. Investigators conducted a forensic download of the phone, finding several pictures and videos of nude males and females.
One of the videos was of a teenage girl getting dressed. Deputies were able to identify and question her. She confirmed that Smith had taken the video.
Smith is currently out of jail on $20,000 bail. He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 21, and could face up to a year in jail.
