LOGAN – The Utah Board of Higher Education is expected to convene on Thursday, October 30, 2025, to consider and announce the next president of Utah State University.

The public meeting will take place at 10 a.m. in the Big Blue Room of the Taggart Student Center on USU’s Logan campus. If additional discussion is needed, the Board may reconvene at a later date, which will be publicly announced.

The complete agenda is available on ushe.edu, and live audio streaming will be available during public portions of the meeting.

This upcoming appointment follows a period of transition for USU’s leadership.

The Utah Board of Higher Education selected Elizabeth “Betsy” R. Cantwell as the 17th president of Utah State University on May 19, 2023. She assumed the role on Aug. 1, 2023.

After spending a year and a half at Utah State, a brief statement Feb. 6, 2025 from the Utah Board of Higher Education indicated Cantwell had accepted another job as the 12th president of Washington State University.

Following her departure, Alan L. Smith was appointed as interim president of Utah State University on February 12, 2025. Smith has been with USU since 2021 and currently serves as dean of the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services.
