LOGAN — Caregiving is something just about every family will face, according to Amy Anderson with the Sunshine Terrace Foundation.
“Absolutely, in fact Rosalind Carter, who people may be aware, herself is aging and has been taking care of her husband, and the two of them are now on Hospice(care). She created an institute for caregiving precisely because of her perspective that there’s only four kinds of people in the world, those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers,” according to Anderson.
On KVNU’s For the People program on Wednesday, she said that no matter who you are, in some way, shape or form, caregiving is going to become a part of your life.
The foundation has sponsored different caregiver support groups and training , but they are doing something a little different, a care giver workshop.
“So, for four weeks on Tuesdays during the month of September, for an hour and a half, we are going to be bringing in individuals who can help provide the tools and resources that family caregivers require. Most people do not expect or are trained to be a caregiver. We can do our best, but I think often it’s helpful to have experts in the field, come and give you better insight.”
She said they are bringing in individuals to help provide some hands-on training. Some of the experts are occupational therapists, certified nursing assistants and an RN, to talk through some of the things that will enable family members to best care for their loved one at home.
“And also, with the mindset of what can we do to keep somebody as independent as possible for as long as possible.”
The workshop will be held at the Worx Outpatient Therapy & Fitness Center at 209 West 300 North, just north of Sunshine Terrace. Cost is a $40 fee for the 4-session workshop.
