CACHE COUNTY – The “old guard” officially changed in Cache County at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023.
Judge Lee Edwards was on-hand for a ceremony to swear in new members of the Cache County Council and other recently elected officials.
Joining the county council are Kathryn A. Beus, Sandi Goodlander and Mark Hurd.
Also sworn in to new terms of office were County Executive David Zook, Clerk/Auditor Jess Bradfield and Sheriff Chad Jensen.
Edwards prefaced the swearing-in ceremony by urging that each of the newly elected officials read and understand the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Utah.
Beus will replace 18-year veteran Gordon A. Zilles on the southeast seat on the county council.
Beus is a Nibley resident who manages the Hyrum branch of Cache Valley Bank.
She is a graduate of Utah State University with dual degrees in Spanish and Constitutional Studies.
Beus’ previous public service experience includes an internship in the office of former U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) in Washington, D.C. as well as service on the Nibley Planning Commission and the Nibley City Council.
Goodlander is replacing Paul R. Borup, who served a single term since 2018 in the Logan 3 seat on the Cache County Council.
She is a native of Idaho who moved to Logan in 2009 with her husband to assume ownership of the Green Gorilla Car Wash on Main Street.
Goodlander studied political science at USU and served an internship in the office of former state Sen. Lyle Hillyard in Salt Lake City in 2015.
Replacing Gina Worthen in the Northeast seat on the Cache County Council is Mark Hurd.
He is a resident of Hyde Park who is employed at Ophir-Spiricon, a firm concerned with laser power/energy measurement in North Logan.
Hurd’s previous public service experience includes two terms on the Hyde Park City Council and on the North Park Police Commission from 2009 to 2019.
He has also been active in local Republican Party circles since 2009, in the roles of central committee member, executive committee member and vice chair.
After being sworn-in, each of the new council members made brief remarks thanking the voters of Cache County as well as their family members and friends for their support.
Absent from the ceremony was John Luthy, who has recently been elected as county attorney.
Luthy resigned from that elective post prior to the Nov. 8 election to take up a new role on the appeals court bench. He has been replaced by Dane Murray, who will now serve as interim county attorney until 2024.
The brief swearing-in ceremony was followed by a reception in the council’s chambers.
