January 22, 1936 – September 6, 2023 (age 87)
Mary Barnett Payne passed away in South Jordan, Utah, on September 6, 2023. She was born January 22, 1936, in Bell, California, to Erik Magnus Barnett and Gladys Isabel Hoggan. She spent her childhood in the Los Angeles area. Mary attended Brigham Young University, where she participated in the marching band and musicals while studying medical laboratory science. She graduated with high honors in Chemistry and Bacteriology.
Mary married Ronald J. Payne in the Salt Lake City Temple on September 2, 1960. She supported him through pharmacy school, medical school, military service, and medical practice while raising their six daughters. Mary created a home full of laughter, music, good books, and traditions for her family. She was an active community volunteer: PTA, Sky View Band Boosters, Cache Valley Civic Ballet, Capitol Theatre Restoration, local and state Medical Auxiliary Associations, North Logan Library, Cache Valley Republican Women, Cache Children’s Choir, USU Community Relations, and Logan Regional Hospital Board.
A woman of faith, she loved serving the young women of the Church and being the primary chorister. Ron and Mary served missions together in the Central America Area Office and the North America Northeast Area. Mary loved music and found choirs to join everywhere she lived, including the Towne Singers and Northern Utah Choral Society. She loved Ron, spending time with family (especially her grandchildren), traveling the world, being with friends, and opening her heart and home.
She is survived by her husband and six daughters and their families: Lorna Payne of Midvale, UT; Ruth (John Harvey) of Sandy, UT; Karen (Richard Paxton) of Ames, IA; Cindy (William Decker) of Sedalia, MO; Beth (Russell Harrison) of Pendleton, OR; and Becky (Douglas Larson) of Roseburg, OR. She has 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
