The most overlooked but crucial factor in managing autoimmunity and inflammation is a blood sugar imbalance. This should always be a top priority if you’re serious about improving your symptoms.

In more than 15 years of working with chronically ill patients, I’ve seen many fail to improve simply because they don’t deal with their blood sugar. Instead, they focus on exotic supplements, chelations, parasite cleanses, or radical diets. I’m not saying those don’t have their place, but they’re not going to compensate for blood sugar that is all over the place.

A blood sugar imbalance deprives your cells of ATP, our bodies’ primary energy source. Think of ATP as trillions of tiny batteries powering every cell. We can only store a few seconds’ worth of ATP at a time, so we rely on the continuous conversion of food into energy. However, a diet that causes constant spikes and crashes in blood sugar disrupts this energy production process, hindering the body’s healing ability.

A staggering 88 percent of Americans suffer from blood-sugar-related metabolic disorders, largely due to the Standard American Diet high in simple carbohydrates and sugars but low in nutrition. In essence, Americans are facing a cellular energy crisis.

Whether your blood sugar is consistently high, consistently low, or fluctuating between both extremes, the outcome is the same: cells receive inadequate glucose to produce energy. Low blood sugar leads to insufficient fuel for cellular demand, while high blood sugar and insulin resistance prevent glucose from entering cells.

Both scenarios leave cells starved for energy.

The longer you live in a state of dysregulated blood sugar—often a lifetime for many Westerners—the more challenging it is to reverse the damage.
