LOGAN — A 46-year-old Taylorsville man with a lengthy history of fraud faces new felony charges after allegedly passing counterfeit checks at multiple Salt Lake Valley retailers in January. 

Jason Tony Nyborg appeared Monday in Logan’s 1st District Court. He with charged with four counts of third-degree felony possession of a forged writing device, four counts of third-degree felony identity fraud and four misdemeanor counts of theft by deception. 

According to an affidavit of probable cause, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after a resident reported four checks were unlawfully used at stores, including Walmart and Dollar Tree. Transaction evidence from Walmart linked Nyborg to the crimes. 

Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at Nyborg’s Salt Lake City residence. Deputies reportedly discovered hardware and software used to manufacture forged checks, alongside credit cards and checks belonging to several other individuals. 

Court records indicate Nyborg has an extensive criminal history in Utah dating back to 2000. He previously pleaded guilty to forgery-related charges in 2018, 2020 and 2022. Additionally, he pleaded guilty in 2017 to attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, forgery and drug possession as part of a negotiated plea agreement.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
