LOGAN — A 35-year-old Logan man was arrested after allegedly stealing an SUV and leading police officers on a high-speed chase, according to law enforcement. Dan Hedin Ropp was booked Monday, Dec. 4, into the Cache County Jail on suspicion of committing 16 various offences.

According to an arrest affidavit, a call came in Monday afternoon from Weber County Dispatch, reporting a stolen black Land Rover out of Ogden may be in Logan. The victim claimed they had a tracker on the vehicle and provided a current location. They also stated a firearm was inside the SUV.

While looking for the vehicle, police received a call from a citizen reporting Ropp arrived at their residence, possibly driving the stolen Land Rover. Officers later observed the SUV traveling westbound on 1800 South at a high rate of speed.

After confirming the vehicle’s license plate, police attempted a traffic stop but the driver allegedly tried to speed away. The SUV reportedly accelerated to over 80 mph, made evasive maneuvers and ran a stop sign, leading officers to terminate the pursuit out of an abundance of caution for the public’s safety, the probable cause statement described.

Within minutes, several callers reported the stolen vehicle had driven down a dead-end road and parked behind some buildings. As police responded, the vehicle drove through several farm fields, crashing through multiple fences and eventually getting stuck in a ditch.

The driver, later identified as Ropp, exited the SUV and began to flee on foot. Law enforcement set up a perimeter and used a drone to follow him through nearby fields and marshes. Police later released a K-9, which apprehended the suspect, the affidavit reported.

As officers approached Ropp, he was allegedly choking the K-9. He also tried to resist arrest as police were placing him in handcuffs.

As law enforcement searched the area, they located the firearm that had been inside the stolen SUV, along with marijuana and a homemade pipe. They also learned that Ropp had previously been convicted of burglary and was prohibited from possessing a gun.

According to jail records, Ropp was booked on suspicion possession of stolen vehicle, evading, resisting arrest, possession of a stolen firearm, among other offences. He is currently being held without bail, pending arraignment of formal charges.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
