LOGAN — A 23-year-old man has admitted to his role in a family dispute in May that led to his arrest. Austin Tayvan Long accepted a plea deal that allowed him to avoid any further jail time.
According to court records, Long appeared June 23 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse, a second-degree felony; aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance within a correctional facility, both , third-degree felonies.
As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to hold the guilty charges in abeyance for two years, allowing the defendant to be released immediately from the Cache County Jail. They also dismissed three remaining charges.
According to prosecutors, 911 dispatch operators received a call on May 25. The caller, a 16-year-old girl, explained how Long had assaulted her and damaged property in their home. She explained how her brother had tackled her, choke slammed her, and damaged a television and other personal property.
The victim was able to run outside to a Utah Highway Patrol trooper who had responded to assist deputies. She had numerous fresh wounds on her body, including cuts and lacerations, red marks on her neck, and bruises on her back, according to arrest paperwork.
The girl told deputies, Long was not helping with chores and she took his vape to try and motivate him to assist. She described how he became angry, and began assaulting and choking her.
During Monday’s court appearance, Long waved his right to a trial and was ordered to complete drug, anger and mental health treatment, instead of serving further jail time. He was also ordered to pay $750 fine. If he is successful in completing the terms of the plea, the charges will be dismissed in June 2028.
