LOGAN — John Curtis has represented Utah’s 3rd Congressional District but will be transitioning to a new role – U.S. Senator from Utah, replacing Mitt Romney who, last year, chose to not seek re-election and to retire from the Senate.
Curtis beat Democrat Caroline Gleich and Independent candidate Carlton Bowen on election night to attain a seat in the U.S. Senate.
On KVNU’s For the People program last Wednesday, Curtis said he thinks the difference was that he already has a record of getting things done.
“If you ask what was the magic, and if you remember the Primary, we did very well in the Primary…I think the magic is people want somebody who gets something done in Washington.
“And they’re tired of the dysfunction, and I was able to show them a little track record in my seven years in Congress. Actually passing meaningful legislation and getting things done, and I’m really proud of that. I’ll go back there and I’ll represent the whole state now,” he explained.
In getting things done, Curtis was asked if he thinks that will get easier or harder in the Senate.
“I compare this, you know how you hear in sports when you go from high school to college the game moves faster. When you go from college to the pros, the game is faster.
“And I think it’s fair to say the game moves far faster in the Senate, not in the sense of quick moving, but maybe higher stakes and perhaps more seasoned colleagues. I think everybody’s just challenged a little bit more.”
Curtis said he’s looking forward to that environment and he thinks he will flourish there.
