LOGAN — A longtime neighborhood grocery store in Logan is planning upgrades and a small expansion aimed at improving service while maintaining its historic character.

Island Market, located at the corner of 400 East and Center Street, has been part of Logan’s Island neighborhood since 1919 and has operated under the Island Market name since 1950. In a note to neighbors and customers, the store’s team thanked the community for decades of support while also announcing some planned updates to the building.

The current building was constructed in 1961 and “is starting to show its age,” according to the statement. To keep operations running smoothly and better serve customers, store officials said they have submitted a proposal to Logan City outlining a series of updates.

Planned improvements include a new public restroom and food preparation area, removal of the existing overhang on the north and west sides of the building, new exterior siding, updated entry doors and windows, and a new sign above the front doors.

The proposal also includes a small building addition. Plans call for removing the existing driveway on the east side of the store and expanding the building about 11 feet to the east to add storage space. The project would also create a new asphalt parking lot with five parking spaces, including one ADA-accessible space, along with new landscaping.

“Our goal is to keep Island Market the same friendly neighborhood store you know, while making a few improvements that help us serve you better and freshen up the outside of the building,” the Island Market team wrote in the notice.

Store officials said they expect to remain open during most of the construction, though there may be a few short closures. They said they will work to minimize disruptions and keep customers informed as the project moves forward.

Island Market said it hopes to continue serving the Island neighborhood in Logan for many years to come.
