LOGAN — A 34-year-old Logan man previously convicted of possessing child sexual abuse material has been sentenced to prison after downloading more exploitative images. John Patrick Becker has been in the Cache County Jail since being arrested in October 2025 following two separate investigations.
Becker appeared Monday in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.
According to prosecutors, North Park Police officers were called to a local computer repair center in July 2025. A technician had allegedly found child pornography on a device belonging to Becker.
At the same time, Logan City Police officers were called to Becker’s residence, after he reported being harassed online. He told police his Discord account, an app used by video gamers, had been hacked. The hackers learned about the Logan man’s criminal history and began notifying other people in his chat groups about his conviction.
As police investigated the case, they learned Becker had been using Discord and a gaming platform, Roblox, without registering the usernames on his sex offender registry. Police noted that both programs have become popular platforms for child sex predators, according to charging documents.
In April 2019, Becker was convicted in Illinois of possession of child pornography, a second-degree felony.
During the Jan. 12 sentencing hearing, Cache County deputy attorney Dane Murray called Becker a “danger to the community.” He explained how the Logan man had claimed the material had come from a computer virus.
Becker told the court, “I understand I have a problem with child pornography.” He expressed hope in getting help while incarcerated.
Judge Spencer Walsh ordered Becker to serve one to 15 years at the Utah State Correctional Facility, giving credit for 75 days already served. He said the defendant’s criminal history was “really troubling.”
“You do pose a great danger to children,” Judge Walsh told Becker. “The parole board may want to keep you a long time.”
