LOGAN – The use of robotic technologies to assist surgeons was a new concept nearly 30 years ago. Only recently has it become feasible.

It has been over 15 years since the first recorded use of a robot for a surgical procedure, so the field of medical robotics is still emerging and has not yet reached critical mass.
Monday and Tuesday of this week Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital held a community open house to offer a close-up look at the hospital’s state-of-the-art Robotic Surgery System and to celebrate the addition of a second advanced robot.

The system is a da Vinci XI robotic-assisted surgical device used for minimally-invasive surgical procures for gynecologic, urologic, thoracic, cardiac, and general surgical patients.
Surgeons, patients and other Intermountain caregivers were available for hands-on demonstrations of the same robotic system surgeons use for training. Hospital personnel explained how robot-assisted procedures can reduce scarring and help improve healing times.
