LOGAN — A 44-year-old Logan man is headed to prison for physically abusing and threatening to kill a woman multiple times during the past several years. Paul M. Wayman cried as he was ordered to serve a term between 2 and 30-years.

Wayman was sentenced in a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Monday morning, appearing by web conference from jail. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading “no contest” and “guilty” to multiple felonies, including aggravated kidnapping and assault.

Defense attorney Joseph Saxton told the court how alcohol abuse was a common link in all of Wayman’s cases. He explained how his client was drinking an average of 30 beers a day before being arrested in October.

The victim tearfully told the court, Wayman needed treatment and learn to control his anger. She explained how the defendant had abused three other women previously.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Ronnie Keller said Wayman’s crimes merited prison so the victims can be protected. He described how the defendant had strangled and threatened to kill the victim multiple times.

Wayman apologized and said his family had meant the world to him. He acknowledged though, having a “really rough relationship,” with the victim. Instead of prison, he asked the court to allow him to seek treatment.

Judge Spencer Walsh said Wayman was a “total bully and tyrant” in his house. He said the defendant’s actions cannot be tolerated, while handing down maximum sentences for the charges.

The exact length of time Wayman serves in prison will later be determined by the Utah State Board of Pardons and Parole.

Judge Walsh said he would recommend credit for time Wayman had already served since being arrested. He also advised mental, substance and domestic abuse treatment during incarceration.
