LOGAN — A 26-year-old Logan man was sentenced to one month in jail for sharing child pornography through social media. Oo Reh was also ordered to be placed on the sex-offender registry and have no access to the internet, after telling the court he didn’t realize the severity of what he had done.
Reh was sentenced Wednesday morning in 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to three counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, a third-degree felony.
Reh was arrested October 1, 2021, after police received a cybertip from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. It described how a computer in the area had been flagged, sharing child pornography through Facebook Messenger.
Police reviewed the evidence in question. It included a pornographic video of a 10 to 12-year-old girl.
Officers tracked the IP address of the Facebook account to Reh’s residence in Logan. He was taken into custody and interviewed.
While being questioned, Reh admitted to police that he had been sharing the video with other users. He also acknowledged to knowing the person in the video was underage.
During Wednesday’s sentencing, defense attorney Samuel Goble said his client, who is originally from Myanmar, didn’t realize that sending child pornography was against the law in this country. He asked the court for leniency, noting the defendant provides for his father and sister.
Speaking through a Burmese interpreter, Reh expressed remorse for what he did. He said, “This was a big mistake that won’t happen again.”
Judge Brian Cannell said, “Not understanding the laws of this country is never an excuse.” He added that each time child pornography is exchanged, it is a re-victimization to the children and expands the gross industry that creates it.
Reh was sentenced to 31 days in jail, while given credit for one day previously served. He was also ordered to complete a cultural awareness class.
