LOGAN — A 34-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to jail and probation for assaulting a woman during a dispute last spring. Ruben Zane Johnson was ordered to serve 67 days in jail but given credit for time already served.
Johnson was sentenced Wednesday morning, Oct. 11, in 1st District Court in Logan. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated assault, one a second-degree felony and the other a third-degree felony.
On June 2, Logan City Police officers were called to an apartment in downtown Logan on report of a domestic dispute in progress. Neighbors had reported hearing screaming coming from the residence.
The victim told police, Johnson had tried to strangle her multiple times, pulled her hair and used a machete to threaten to kill her. He also blocked her from leaving the apartment, locking the door and threatening her with other knives.
The woman was transported to the hospital to be evaluated by medical staff.
During Wednesday’s sentencing, defense attorney Michael McGinnis said the facts in Johnson’s case were “very disturbing and out of character.” He blamed his client’s actions on substance abuse.
Johnson briefly expressed remorse to the victim and said he wanted to do everything he could to right his wrongs.
Judge Brian Cannell sentenced Johnson to two months of jail, followed by probation. He also ordered him to continue drug treatment and warned that if he failed to change his life, he is looking at a possible prison sentence.
