LOGAN — A 39-year-old Logan man has confessed to sexually abusing a teenage girl almost two years ago. Alexander C. Perkins accepted a plea deal and will now wait to be sentenced in six weeks.
Perkins participated in a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Monday morning, appearing by web conference with his attorney. He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.
Defense attorney Shannon Demler explained that as part of the resolution, prosecutors agreed to drop a remaining felony against the defendant. They will also not recommend more than six years incarceration at sentencing.
Smithfield City police officers were called to investigate the sexual assault after the victim told her parents about what happened. She explained being sexually abused by Perkins, who was a family acquaintance.
The crime occurred in June 2020. The case has been partially delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic that limited in-person court hearings. It was scheduled for trial March 15.
Perkins remains out of jail on bail on $40,000 bail and will be sentenced in April. He could be sentenced to up to life in prison, or less time if the judge accepts attorney’s recommendations.
