LOGAN — A 58-year-old Logan man has admitted to sexually assaulting two women during the past three years. Carl James Bassett was originally booked into the Cache County Jail last January and later released on pretrial supervision.
Bassett appeared Monday afternoon in 1st District Court for a status hearing. He accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to two counts of forcible sexual abuse, a third-degree felony.
Defense attorney Michael McGinnis explained how as part of the agreement, prosecutors agreed not to seek a prison term at the time of sentencing. They also dropped two remaining charges.
Last year, Logan City Police officers received a report of a sexual assault after Bassett had grabbed the breasts of a woman, who was a family relative. Several weeks later, another victim described being sexually abused in a similar way in 2019.
Police had investigated Bassett for similar allegations years ago. He was arrested and charged with forcible sexual abuse and sexual battery in 2013. He later accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to five days in jail and 12 months probation.
During Monday’s hearing, Judge Angela Fonnesbeck ordered Bassett to complete a presentence report with probation agents, about his criminal history. She scheduled a sentencing hearing for Jan. 30.
