LOGAN — A 27-year-old Logan man is headed to prison for at least 15 years after being convicted of sexually abusing a young girl earlier this year. Alexis Yoshimar Vilcapoma-Salaman apologized to the victim and her family, before receiving the maximum sentence.
Vilcapoma-Salaman was sentenced Monday, Nov. 20, in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading “no contest” to aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.
As part of the resolution, prosecutors dismissed two remaining charges. The plea meant he conceded the charge alleged without admitting guilt or offering a defense.
Vilcapoma-Salaman has been in the Cache County Jail since Logan City Police officers found a lone vehicle parked near the Willow Park Sports Complex around 3:30 a.m. on April 17, 2023. They reported the car was shaking and the windows were fogged.
Police said Vilcapoma-Salaman appeared “very nervous and sweating.” They also located a 12-year-old girl in the back seat.
The victim told police she was having sexual relations with Vilcapoma-Salaman during the night. She also had multiple bruises on her neck.
Police located several used and unopened condoms inside the vehicle.
During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Shannon Demler said his client had no criminal record and was a hard worker. He noted how the defendant had come to America to earn money for his family in Peru.
Vilcapoma-Salaman said through a Spanish interpreter, “this was the worst mistake in his life.” He asked for another chance to change his life.
Judge Spencer Walsh said he had received numerous letters from Vilcapoma-Salaman’s friends and family praising his character. However, he noted that the law mandated a sentence of 15-years-to-life for the crime and he didn’t see a reason to deviate from it.
“This is a severe sentence due to the impact you had on the victim,” Judge Walsh told Vilcapoma-Salaman. “I need to send a message that this is not tolerated in our community.”
