LOGAN – City officials have compiled a list of do’s and don’t’s to help make Halloween a safe and spooky night for everyone involved in Trick or Treating on Oct. 31.

Those tips are intended for children, drivers and homeowners, according to officials of the Logan Emergency Management Department.

Trick or Treaters, they advise, should carry flashlights or glow stick to stay visible as they cruise Logan neighborhoods. Children should stay on sidewalks and only cross streets at corners or lighted crosswalks. They should never enter a stranger’s house or car and always check their candy haul before starting to enjoy it.

The best advice for drivers is to slow down and stay alert while Trick or Treaters are moving about on city streets. Everyone should put their phones down and focus on the roads. Drivers are also reminded to watch for children at crosswalks, intersections and in driveways.

Homeowners are also warned to keep walkways well-lite. For fire safety, only battery-powered candles should be used in jack o’ lanterns. Pet owners are advised to keep their animals indoors on Halloween to avoid accidents or scares.

City emergency managers also suggest that homeowner show kindness, patience and understanding to all children who come to their doors on Halloween.

Officials remind everyone that some kids may communicate differently, take a little longer to respond to friendly questions or avoid eye contract while Trick or Treating.

Others may have sensory or functional challenges that make costumes, lights or sounds overwhelming for them.

Every child experiences the fun of Halloween in his or her own way, city officials explain, and a little compassion goes a long way.

The tips from city officials are intended to help make Halloween a safe, welcoming and inclusive night for every child.
