LOGAN – Woodruff and Providence elementary schools in Cache Valley will be taking part in United Way of Northern Utah’s Read Across America on March 3.
United Way invited community members, businesses, and teams of all sizes to join in celebrating this Read Across America event.
At one time is was celebrated as Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, a nationwide reading celebration that took place annually on March 2.
While some may still celebrate the children’s book author, some have changed the emphasis.
Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books, and all people are invited to participate as well.
National Education Association (NEA) launched Read Across America in 1998 and it claims to be the nation’s largest celebration of reading.
Schools, libraries, and communities of readers celebrate with an annual event on March 2.
This program provides educators, parents, caregivers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year.
The program is a nationwide initiative dedicated to inspiring a love of reading in children.
This national event will take place March 2–6, 2026, offering volunteer opportunities that directly supports local elementary schools.
Studies have shown spending just one hour reading with students, volunteers help nurture imagination, confidence, and academic success, while showing children that their community is invested in their future.
“This is one of our most joyful volunteer experiences,” said United Way representative Amandi Goodwin-Garstka. “It’s a fun, episodic opportunity—just an hour from start to finish—but the impact on students lasts far longer. Volunteers walk away with that unmistakable ‘feel‐good sense of having made a real difference.”
Participants can sign up individually or as a group, making this an excellent team‐building experience for workplaces, civic groups, and community organizations.
Volunteers will be welcomed into classrooms to read aloud, share stories, and help create positive memories around literacy.
