CACHE COUNTY – Once again, Cache Valley is scheduled to be the site of organized protests against Trump administration policies.

That demonstration – which is slated to take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 1) – is expected to draw workers, union members and local organizations who oppose recent actions they consider authoritarian by President Donald Trump.

“In addition to the traditional barbecues this Labor Day,” said local organizer Jack Greene, “we are hosting a rally to highlight voices of people who are affected by the decisions of the current government.”

Greene and other organizers say that the local protest on the plaza at Historic Cache County Courthouse will be part of more than 1,000 events nationwide aimed at stopping the Trump administration’s alleged “billionaire takeover” and resulting government corruption.

The theme of those events will be “Workers Over Billionaires: A Labor Day of Action.”

The local organizers are inviting local labor leaders, community groups, educators, students and working families across northern Utah to turn out for the Labor Day rally.

“We will hear from a wide range of community members about working and living in today’s America,” Greene explained. “They will use original or existing protest songs, poems or texts to express our hopes and dreams for a better world.”

The Labor Day protest is being organized by WeThePeople Cache Valley, a local chapter of Indivisible.org. That same group led monthly local demonstrations in the spring during April and May.

Although the protest on April 5 was deemed a “huge success” by drawing an estimated crowd of between 200 and 300 people, attendance at the rally on May 3 fell off sharply due to soaring summer temperatures and the absence of Utah State University students and faculty.

National organizers of the “Workers Over Billionaires” protests promise that people will come together on Labor Day to demand fully-funded schools, health care for all and to defend against attacks on workers’ rights, immigrant families and communities of color.
