LOGAN — A Lewiston woman was killed and three Idaho residents were hospitalized in a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon north of Cove. The crash was reported at 1:40 p.m. along US-91, about a one mile south of the Utah/Idaho border.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jason Kendrick said the woman was travelling northbound in a Mazda 3, when a GMC Terrain that was traveling southbound swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting the car head-on.
“Witnesses said it appeared the SUV hydroplaned,” said Kendrick. “The roads were mostly dry where the tires were travelling. It was a little damp in the median. Right now, it is under investigation as to why the driver crossed into oncoming traffic.”
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released, pending notification of family.
Kendrick said the driver of the SUV, a man from Preston, was not wearing a seatbelt, and was taken to the hospital with significant injuries.
A female passenger in the front seat was wearing a seatbelt. She was also injured and transferred to a Salt Lake area hospital.
A 10-month-old baby in the backseat was in a car seat. The child was flown from the scene to Primary Children’s Hospital.
A section of US-91 was closed for some time as crews treated the injured and investigated the crash.
