LOGAN — A 34-year-old Layton man has admitted to sexually assaulting a teenage girl last fall. Kenneth Lawrence Smith accepted a plea deal and will remain in jail until he is sentenced in July.
Court records show, Smith appeared Wednesday morning in 1st District Court in Logan. He pleaded guilty to forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony; and endangerment of a child, a third-degree felony.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped six remaining charges.
According to prosecutors, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies were contacted by the alleged victim last November. She explained how Smith drove her to Blacksmith Fork Canyon on Oct. 29. He then gave her alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine, and molested her.
The girl described how “she was out of it, and not feeling well,” after consuming the drugs and alcohol. During that time, Smith touched her breasts, tried to kiss her and started removing his pants, before she asked him what he was doing.
The juvenile disclosed how she asked Smith to take her home but he initially refused, claiming her mom would be upset if she saw her in the condition she was in. He also took her cellphone from her, so she couldn’t call for help.
Smith is being held in jail on a $100,000 bail. He will be sentenced next month, when he could face up to 15-years in prison.
