LOGAN — Local officials are again warning about scammers who are posing as law enforcement, attempting to steal money or personal information from citizens. The caution came from both the Logan City Police Department and Cache County Sheriff’s Office, who both have received numerous reports of people receiving calls from individuals claiming to be officers or deputies.
Officials with the sheriff’s office said the phone calls reportedly came from individuals pretending to be from law enforcement, in some cases using names of actual deputies. These scammers demand payment from victims, claiming that if they do not pay, a warrant will be issued and they will be arrested.
The police department added that the scammers demand payment by the way of gift cards or money transfers. These payment methods make it virtually impossible to track.
Victims have reported the scammers sound official and will make it appear that they are calling from an official phone number. In some cases, they will have even gathered information about the victims on social media.
The sheriff’s office and police department reminds citizens that law enforcement does not contact people by phone to advise them they have warrants. They will also never request payment in the form of gift cards or money transfers.
Citizens are advised to verify any type of suspicious phone calls. If you are contacted, hang up immediately, and call law enforcement directly to report it.
