James Albert Hunter, affectionately known to his friends and family as “Bert” or “Jim,” died in his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 20, 2022, in Logan, Utah, at the age of 87. Jim was born on September 24, 1934, in Granite, Utah, to his parents, Roland Silas Hunter and Vida Eleanor Thomson Hunter. He graduated from Weber High School and began working at Hill Air Force Base and Ogden Arsenal, loading hand grenades into railroad boxcars. Jim worked for the Bureau of Reclamation and helped to build Willard Bay. He met the love of his life, Jeanette Wolfe Hunter, on July 24, 1954, and proposed on Christmas Day of that same year. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on June 24, 1955. Five of their seven kids joined their family while living in the Ogden, Washington Terrace area. In November of 1969, they moved to Wellsville, Utah, which Jim said: “was the best move they ever made.” It was here that the last two of their seven children joined their family.
They lived on Center Street of Wellsville for 22 years and enjoyed living in the place they have always referred to as “home.” Jim has lived a life of service, serving in many different capacities within the church. He served in multiple bishoprics, as Elder’s Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, as a Home Teacher; a calling he dearly loved, and many others. Eventually he served as bishop in the newly formed Wellsville 2nd ward. Along with caring for his family, church service was one of the most important things and brought him great joy. Through his life in Wellsville and his church service, he met many dear friends and gained a reputation as a gentle, kind, loving, and generous man.
Jim worked hard to support his family throughout the years, laying carpet, working at Thiokol, as a Culligan waterman, at the Wellsville Cheese Plant, at the Logan LDS Cheese Plant upholstering furniture, and one of his favorite jobs later in life was a Walmart greeter. These jobs brought him in contact with people, and he quickly made friends with his loving smile, kind words, and witty sense of humor. He was a master woodworker and loved creating and sharing furniture, toys, and vintage automobiles to give away. Jim kept a large plastic tote full of wooden toys and loved watching the kids choose their favorite. His heart was always full and was the last thing to stop giving.
Surviving Jim is his loving wife of 67 years, Jeanette Hunter, their seven children: Nancy Hunter (Scott), Gilbert, AZ, Corrie Brough (Ken), Weston, ID, Andy Hunter (Kathy), Rigby, ID, Mark Hunter (Linda), Fairview, WY, Tim Hunter (Rhonda), Hyrum, UT, Amy Hunter-Holmes, Harrisville, UT, Dustin Hunter (Carrie), Providence, UT. He was the proud grandpa to 33 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. His parents and siblings preceded him in death, including two brothers and three sisters. He was also preceded in death by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family would like to thank Kenzie and Wyatt Hansen, Bishop Stearns and family, Dr. Johnson and his staff, Danielle with Susie’s Companions, Shelly at BRAG, and the sweet caregivers at IHC Hospice, specifically Chaplain Darron Fletcher, Gaby, Maddie, Jennifer, Jamie, and Carolyn, for the loving care they gave to our dad and mom.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 28, 2022, at White Pine Funeral Services, 753 South 100 East in Logan. Viewings will be held on Sunday, March 27 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM and on Monday, March 28 from 9:30 – 10:30 AM at White Pine Funeral Services, 753 South 100 East in Logan. Interment will be at the Wellsville Cemetery.
