SALT LAKE CITY — The issue has been embraced by Utah Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, it has gotten attention by lawmakers in Utah, it’s a federal movement as well.
It’s the attempt to cap the high costs for insulin that affects hundreds of thousands of Americans and millions around the world.
On KVNU’s For the People program on Wednesday, Diana Thomas, support lead for the Utah Chapter of Insulin-4-All talked about what drew her to the movement at large.
“In 2016 my niece died suddenly, and it took a little bit of time to find out she had undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes, then 7 months later, my daughter right before her 11th birthday was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. So,our family is very aware of the high costs this disease can be to families,” she explained.
She said the state of Utah has helped by controlling costs if your insurance has a Utah-managed plan.
“If…some employer, especially larger employers will often have a more national plan, or somewhere is managed by another state, they did not have to follow that price cap. In order to help those people who were not covered directly by a Utah-managed plan, they offered Utah savings so that what is offered is the same as what state employees pay.”
Insulin-4-All is having an international summit this Saturday, Sept 24th. It will feature advocates and speakers from all over the world.
