LOGAN — The Cache Valley Humanitarian Center was launched a few years ago with the assistance of Logan’s two Rotary Clubs.
They started out with a small grant from the governor’s collaborative grant program and since then they’ve been able to do some pretty big things.
They have made back-to-school kits for families, provided hygiene kits, also produced sleeping mats for homeless individuals throughout Northern Utah. Also, they set up a Navajo Community Library among their accomplishments.
The center is holding an Open House this Thursday, August 1st from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at their temporary location – the Riverwoods Complex at 595 South Riverwood Parkway just off of 100 East in Logan.
On KVNU’s For the People program last week, Dwight Whittaker, who co-founded the organization with his wife Katherine, talked about the two goals of the organization.
“Our two main functions have been, basically, first of all we wanted to be community-centered. So, we have a board of directors representing all of Cache Valley; and, our definition of Cache Valley is Wellsville to Preston.
“And the second point…was to be needs-based, we didn’t want to be doing anything that people didn’t need,” Whittaker explained.
At the Open House, refreshments will be served and you can meet members of the Utah State football, basketball, soccer and volleyball teams. They will be joining guests and volunteers.
“For example, last September…the USU Basketball team came in and volunteered, and we always say, that’s why they did so well, was because they worked together as a team as volunteers and gelled together throughout the basketball season.”
