Idaho primary elections will take place on Tue. May 17

PRESTON – Although Franklin County has little drama going into the May 17, 2022, primary elections, the state elections in Idaho are not without a little controversy.

Camille Larsen, the Franklin County Clerk, said there was not any real excitement with their primaries, but there seems to be some troubled winds blowing in the Idaho state capital.

The Idaho Secretary of State’s office reported Idaho’s roughly 1 million registered voters got a boost when some 9,600 voters switched their affiliation to Republican Party ahead of this week’s primaries.

The Gem State is considered a Republican stronghold and only registered Republicans are allowed to vote for GOP candidates in Tuesday’s election.

Governor Brad Little has seven Republican challengers in this year’s primary, including Lt. Governor Janice McGeachin, Steven Bradshaw, Ben Cannady, Ed Humphreys, Ashley Jackson, Lisa Marie and Cody Usabel.

On the federal level, U.S. Senator Mike Crapo and U.S. Congressman Michael K. Simpson are up for reelection with challengers in the wings, including Brenda Bourn, Natalie Fleming, Scott Trotter and Ramont Turnbull for U.S. Senate and Flint Christensen, Daniel Algiers, Lucas Levy, Chris Porter and Bryan Smith for the 2nd Congressional District.

All of the Idaho Legislature and all seven elected statewide offices are up for election this year, making it one of the busiest primary years in recent memory.

The 2022 Idaho Primary Election will determine which candidates will represent the five different parties listed on the Franklin County ballot. Constitution, Democratic, Libertarian, Republican and Non-Partisan parties are all listed on the May 17, primary ballots for the general election in November.

Idaho’s closed-primary system lets political parties limit who’s allowed to vote in a particular party’s primary.

The Franklin County Republican candidates for this year’s elections are:

Commissioner Dist. #2 (4-year term)
Robert C. Swainston

Commissioner Dist. 3 (2-year term)
Dirk Bowles
J.D. Drury Rep
Tyler Fry
Tyler Olsen

Clerk of the District Court (4-Year Term)
